Word Meanings:
- Yadh-dhakkar (يَذَّكَّرُ): To be reminded, to take heed, or to receive admonition and let it sink into the heart.
- Fat-anfa‘ahu (فَتَنفَعَهُ): So that it benefits him — meaning, it brings about a positive change in his conduct or faith.
- Adh-dhikrā (الذِّكْرَىٰ): The reminder, the admonition, or the counsel — referring to the Qur’anic guidance and prophetic advice being conveyed.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the compassionate address to the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding the blind man who came seeking guidance. Allah says: "Or he might be reminded, and the reminder would benefit him." The meaning is that this seeker of truth — though poor and blind — might receive your admonition, and his heart would open to it. He might take heed of your words, reflect upon them, and change his ways for the better. The reminder could purify his soul, increase his faith, and guide him to righteous deeds. This is a profound lesson: we should never underestimate the power of sincere counsel, nor look down upon those who come seeking knowledge and guidance, regardless of their social standing or appearance. The one who humbly asks for guidance is often more deserving of our attention than the one who turns away in arrogance — for the former’s heart is receptive, while the latter’s is sealed.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this beautiful scene from the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The one who came to learn was not turned away by Allah; rather, Allah rebuked the turning away itself. This teaches us the immense value of seeking knowledge and the great reward of those who strive to benefit from reminders. When you attend a lesson, listen to a sermon, or read the Qur’an, let your heart be open — for the reminder is a mercy from Allah, and it can transform your life in ways you never imagined. Do not let pride or busyness deprive you of the light of guidance. The reminder benefits only those who receive it with sincerity and humility. So be like that blind companion — eager, humble, and sincere — and you will find that the words of Allah will indeed benefit you, purify your soul, and illuminate your path to Paradise.
