Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿIlliyyūn (عِلِّيُّونَ): The highest, most exalted places in Paradise; the loftiest ranks and stations. It is derived from the root meaning "height" or "elevation," indicating sublime elevation in both status and location.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a rhetorical question posed by Allah to His Messenger ﷺ: "And what will make you know what ʿIlliyyūn is?" — a phrase that serves to magnify and glorify the subject, emphasizing that its true reality is beyond human comprehension. The implied meaning is: "What will make you know what is in ʿIlliyyūn?" — that is, what rewards, honors, and delights are stored therein for the righteous.
ʿIlliyyūn is the abode of the abrār (the righteous and God-fearing), and it is a written record — a decree that is complete and settled, neither increased nor decreased — which the closest angels (al-muqarrabūn) of every heaven behold and bear witness to. This is a book of deeds that is preserved in the highest heavens, and its contents are known to the angels who are near to Allah, signifying the immense honor and distinction of those whose deeds are recorded therein.
The verse instills awe and wonder, inviting the believer to reflect: if the reality of ʿIlliyyūn is so great that even the Prophet ﷺ is told he cannot fully grasp it through his own knowledge, then how magnificent must it be? It is a place of sheer elevation — both in physical height and in spiritual rank — reserved for those who lived in obedience to Allah, guarded their souls from sin, and remained steadfast upon the truth.
Daʿwah (Call to Allah):
O beloved servant of Allah! When you hear of ʿIlliyyūn, let your heart yearn and your soul aspire. This is not a distant fantasy — it is a real destination prepared by the Most Merciful for those who strive. Every prayer you guard, every honest word you speak, every tear shed in humility before Allah, every act of kindness done in secret — all of it is being written in a book that the angels of the highest heavens themselves honor and witness. Your deeds are not lost; they are elevated to a station that even the Prophet ﷺ was told surpasses human imagination. So race toward it! Do not let the world deceive you with its fleeting pleasures, for ʿIlliyyūn is the reward of those who chose the eternal over the temporary. Let this verse ignite in you a burning desire to be among the abrār — those whose names are raised high in the presence of Allah and His angels. And know that the path to such elevation is simple: sincerity to Allah, obedience to His Messenger ﷺ, and steadfastness upon His religion, no matter the cost.
