Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- كَالُوهُمْ (kālūhum): When they measure or dispense something to others by volume (using a measuring container).
- وَزَنُوهُمْ (wazanūhum): When they weigh something for others using a scale.
- يُخْسِرُونَ (yukh'sirūn): They give less than the full due — they cheat by reducing the measure or weight.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the deplorable behavior of those who are guilty of fraud in trade and daily transactions. After mentioning in the previous verse that they demand full measure when they receive goods from others, Allah now exposes their ugly trait when the roles are reversed: when they measure or weigh for others, they deliberately give less than what is owed. They take in full, but give out short. This is a clear sign of a corrupt heart that prioritizes worldly gain over honesty, justice, and the fear of Allah.
This behavior was rampant among the people of Madinah at the time of the Prophet's migration (peace be upon him), and it is a warning that such cheating is not a minor sin — it is a grave injustice that invites severe punishment. The verse serves as a mirror for every Muslim: do we treat others the way we want to be treated? Do we give others their full rights, whether in business, in family, in friendships, or in society at large?
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear Muslim, this verse is not merely a historical account — it is a living lesson for you and me. Allah, the Most Merciful, is teaching us that true faith is reflected in our honesty and fairness. When you give someone their full right — whether in a kilogram of rice, a meter of fabric, or even a kind word — you are not just being polite; you are worshipping Allah. And when you withhold what is due to others, even if it is small, you are planting a seed of destruction in your own life.
Imagine standing before Allah on the Day of Judgment, where every scale will be perfectly balanced, and every deed — no matter how tiny — will be brought forth. Would you not want your scales to be heavy with honesty and integrity? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The truthful and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs" (Tirmidhi). What an honor! So let this verse be a gentle yet firm reminder: be among those who give full measure, for Allah loves those who are just. And know that your honesty is never wasted — it is a treasure that will shine for you on the Day when nothing else will help.
