Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أُرْسِلُوا (were sent): i.e., appointed or commissioned as guardians over them.
  • حَافِظِينَ (guardians): those entrusted with watching over others' deeds, actions, or guidance.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the arrogant disbelievers who mocked the believers in this worldly life. They looked down upon the followers of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), calling them misguided and lost, simply because they embraced faith and righteousness. In response, Allah declares that these disbelievers were never appointed as guardians or supervisors over the believers. They were not sent to watch over the believers' actions, to judge their choices, or to correct their path. Their mockery and criticism were baseless, born of arrogance and ignorance, not of any divine mandate or authority.

The verse strips away any false legitimacy from their scorn. It reminds us that no human being has the right to belittle another's sincere faith or to claim superiority in guiding others without divine sanction. The disbelievers' words carried no weight; they were not keepers of the believers' affairs, nor were they responsible for their guidance or misguidance. Their laughter and ridicule in this world were temporary, and the tables will turn on the Day of Judgment when the believers will laugh at them, as the following verses confirm.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the profound justice of this verse. How often do people mock what they do not understand? How often do the arrogant assume they have the right to judge the sincere? This verse is a comfort to every believer who has faced ridicule for their faith. It reassures you that your critics hold no authority over you—they are not your guardians, and their opinions do not define your worth in the sight of Allah. Stand firm in your faith, for the One who created you sees your sincerity, and He alone is the true Guardian of His righteous servants. Do not let the laughter of the ignorant shake your certainty, for the final victory belongs to the believers, and the mockers will taste the bitterness of their own words in the Hereafter. Embrace this truth, and let it fill your heart with peace and steadfastness on the straight path.

📜 Verse 31-35 — Al-Mutaffifin

And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
On adorned couches, observing.
