Word Meanings:

  • Yatajannabuha (وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا): To avoid, shun, or keep away from something deliberately.
  • Al-Ashqa (الْأَشْقَى): The most wretched, the most miserable, the one who is most unfortunate in terms of faith and destiny.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse continues the discussion about the remembrance and admonition of Allah (the Quran). After mentioning in the preceding verse that "he who fears Allah will take heed," Allah now clarifies the opposite side: "But the most wretched will avoid it."

The "most wretched" here refers to the one who has been overtaken by misery and stubbornness in disbelief — the one whose heart has been sealed against guidance. This person deliberately turns away from the Quran, from the reminders of Allah, and from all forms of sincere counsel. They do not merely neglect the reminder; they actively avoid it, flee from it, and distance themselves from it with aversion and hostility.

This avoidance stems from their arrogance, their love of this worldly life, and their refusal to submit to the truth. They are described as "the most wretched" because their destiny is sealed with misery — not only in this world, where they live in confusion and spiritual emptiness, but especially in the Hereafter, where they will enter the great Fire, enduring its intense heat. In that Fire, they will neither die (to find rest) nor live (a life of any benefit). Their punishment is perpetual and agonizing.

The verse serves as a profound warning: the one who shuns Allah's reminder is cutting himself off from the very source of life, mercy, and salvation. The Quran is a healing for the hearts and a light for the paths of those who embrace it, but for those who turn away, it becomes a witness against them on the Day of Judgment.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: How blessed is the one whose heart trembles when Allah's verses are recited, and how unfortunate is the one who hears the truth yet turns away as if he never heard it! The Quran is not merely a book to be read; it is a living guide that calls you to eternal success. Do not let your desires, your pride, or your worldly attachments become the veil that separates you from this divine mercy.

Every day, the reminder of Allah is presented to you — in the call to prayer, in the pages of the Quran, in the sermons of the righteous, and in the signs scattered across the universe. Do not be among those who flee from it, for their loss is immense. Instead, open your heart, humble your soul, and let the words of your Lord illuminate your path. For indeed, the one who fears Allah and draws near to His remembrance has already secured the greatest treasure: the pleasure of Allah and the eternal bliss of Paradise.

May Allah make us among those who listen to the reminder and follow the best of it, and may He protect us from being among the most wretched. Ameen.

9فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ الذِّكْرَىٰ
So remind, if the reminder should benefit;
10سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ
He who fears [Allah] will be reminded.
11وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا الْأَشْقَى
But the wretched one will avoid it -
12الَّذِي يَصْلَى النَّارَ الْكُبْرَىٰ
[He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,
13ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ
Neither dying therein nor living.
