Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • ضَالًّا (ḍāllan): Literally means "lost" or "astray." In this context, it refers to being unaware of the Divine teachings, the Qur'an, and the path of faith — not knowing the way to guidance.
  • فَهَدَىٰ (fa-hadā): "Then He guided." This means Allah guided him to the truth, the knowledge of the Book, and the straight path of Islam.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of a series of gentle reminders from Allah to His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), reassuring him of Allah's constant care and favor. Here, Allah says: "And He found you lost, so He guided you."

Before the revelation of the Qur'an, the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not know the details of the Divine scriptures, the laws of faith, or the comprehensive teachings of Islam. He was, in a sense, "lost" — not in the sense of moral corruption or idolatry, for he was always a man of pure nature and noble character, but in the sense that he did not possess the complete knowledge of the Book and the faith. He did not know how to worship Allah in the manner Allah wanted, nor did he know the full truth about the unseen, the prophets, and the Day of Judgment.

Then Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, chose him, revealed the Qur'an to him, taught him what he did not know, and guided him to the most perfect way of life — the way of Islam. This guidance was not just intellectual knowledge but a complete transformation of his life, making him the greatest teacher and guide for all of humanity.

This verse is a profound reminder of Allah's grace. Just as He guided the Prophet from a state of unawareness to the light of revelation, He can guide anyone who sincerely seeks the truth. No matter how far a person feels from guidance, Allah's mercy is vast enough to bring them back to the straight path.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful verse. If Allah could take a man from the deserts of Arabia, who was unlettered and unaware of the scriptures, and elevate him to the highest rank of guidance — a light for all of humanity until the end of time — then know that Allah's guidance is available to you as well. Do not despair if you feel lost or confused in this world. Turn to your Creator with a sincere heart, and He will guide you, just as He guided His beloved Prophet. The Qur'an is the eternal guidance; open it, read it, and let it illuminate your heart and your life. Allah's promise is true: He guides whom He wills to the straight path.

And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.
Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge?
And He found you lost and guided [you],
And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient.
So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him].
