Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yateeman (يَتِيمًا): An orphan — one whose father has died while they are still young and in need of care and protection.
  • Fa’āwā (فَآوَىٰ): Gave shelter, refuge, and care — providing a safe and nurturing place to live, along with protection and compassion.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a gentle, loving reminder from Allah to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of His abundant grace and favour. Allah asks: “Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?”

Indeed, the Prophet’s father, Abdullah, passed away before his birth, leaving him without a father’s care from the very beginning of his life. Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave him abandoned. He placed him under the loving protection of his grandfather, Abdul-Muttalib, who treated him with great honour and affection. After his grandfather’s passing, Allah continued to care for him through his uncle, Abu Talib, who sheltered him, defended him, and supported him throughout his life.

This was not a mere coincidence — it was divine arrangement. Allah was preparing His beloved Messenger, surrounding him with care and dignity, so that he would grow with noble character and a heart ready to receive the greatest revelation. The verse carries a tone of tender reassurance: “O Muhammad, do you not see how I have always been with you, even before you knew Me? I have never abandoned you, and I will never abandon you now.”

A Da’wah Reflection for the Reader:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about trust in Allah. Just as Allah cared for His Prophet when he was most vulnerable — an orphan with no father — He cares for every one of His servants in their moments of weakness and need. No matter how alone you may feel, Allah is always near. He places people in your life to support you, opens doors you never expected, and turns your hardships into stepping stones of honour.

If you are going through a difficult time, remember: the One who sheltered the orphaned Prophet is the same Lord who hears your prayers and sees your tears. He has a plan for you, filled with mercy and wisdom. So hold on to Him, trust in His promise, and know that after every hardship comes ease — just as the orphaned boy of Makkah became the greatest leader of humanity, all by the grace of Allah.
