Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • ʿĀ’ilan (عَائِلًا): Poor, needy, or in a state of financial hardship.
  • Fa-Aghnā (فَأَغْنَىٰ): Then He enriched you, made you self-sufficient, and granted you contentment and sufficiency.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a profound reminder of Allah’s grace and care for His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah says: "And He found you poor and in need, so He enriched you."

Before the Prophet’s mission, he was a man of modest means. He had lost his father before birth, his mother at a young age, and his grandfather shortly after. He grew up as an orphan, working as a shepherd and later as a trader. Despite his noble character and trustworthiness, he was not wealthy. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave him in that state. Through His divine provision, Allah granted him sustenance, success in his endeavors, and—most importantly—a heart content with what was given. This enrichment was not merely material; it was a spiritual and moral enrichment as well. Allah gave him the wealth of patience, gratitude, and inner peace, making him independent of the fleeting treasures of this world.

This verse is part of a series of divine blessings that Allah recounts to His beloved Prophet, comforting him during a time when revelation had paused and the disbelievers were mocking him. Allah reassures him: just as He cared for him in the past, He will never abandon him now or in the future.

A Call to Reflect and Act:

Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. The same Allah who cared for His Prophet in his moments of need is your Lord as well. If you are facing hardship, poverty, or uncertainty, know that Allah’s mercy is boundless. He who enriched the orphaned and poor Prophet is fully capable of enriching you—whether with wealth, contentment, or both.

Let this verse fill your heart with hope and trust in Allah. Turn to Him in supplication, work with sincerity, and be patient. For Allah’s provision comes from where you least expect it, and His care for His servants never ceases. Indeed, the One who found you in your need and guided you to Islam will never leave you empty-handed. So hold fast to Him, and let your heart find peace in His promise.
