Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Yateem (الْيَتِيمَ): The orphan — a child who has lost his father before reaching maturity.
- Taqhar (تَقْهَر): To oppress, mistreat, humiliate, or dominate harshly. It carries the sense of crushing someone with severity and injustice.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah Almighty reminded His Prophet (peace be upon him) of the blessings He had bestowed upon him — from being an orphan to being sheltered, from being astray to being guided, and from being poor to being enriched — He now commands him to translate these blessings into noble conduct toward others.
This verse addresses the Prophet directly, and through him, the entire Muslim nation: "So as for the orphan, do not oppress him." The command is comprehensive — it prohibits all forms of mistreatment toward orphans, whether by taking their wealth unjustly, humiliating them, speaking harshly to them, or looking down upon them. Instead, the believer is called to treat orphans with gentleness, compassion, and care — to be a loving guardian who protects their rights and nurtures them as if they were one's own children.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was an orphan, having lost his father before birth and his mother at a young age. Allah reminds him of this shared experience to deepen his empathy — and by extension, the empathy of every believer — toward those who have lost their protectors. The one who has tasted the bitterness of losing a parent should be the first to shield others from that same pain, not to add to it.
This divine instruction is a cornerstone of Islamic social justice. It elevates the orphan from being a victim of neglect to being a trust placed in the hands of the community. The believer who cares for an orphan is promised closeness to the Prophet in Paradise — a reward beyond measure. So let every Muslim reflect: How do we treat the vulnerable among us? Do we protect them, or do we turn away? This verse is a call to action — to be a source of warmth and safety for those who have no one else, and in doing so, to draw nearer to Allah and His Messenger.
