Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sulṭān (سلطان): A clear proof, evidence, or authority that establishes the truth of a claim.
- Subḥānahu (سبحانه): Glory be to Him — declaring Him utterly free from every imperfection and from anything unworthy of His majesty.
- Al-Ghaniyy (الغني): The Self-Sufficient, the One who is free of all needs and wants.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The polytheists of Makkah and others who denied the Oneness of Allah made a monstrous claim — they said that Allah has taken a son. Some claimed the angels were His daughters; others claimed the Messiah was His son. Allah responds to this falsehood with a declaration of His absolute perfection: *"Glory be to Him!"* — meaning He is far above and completely free from such a thing. How could the Creator of all things, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, have a child when a child is born of need and likeness?
Allah then reminds them of His complete self-sufficiency: *"He is Al-Ghaniyy"* — He is rich beyond all need. He does not need a son to help Him, to inherit from Him, or to continue His work. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him as His creation and His servants. Everything is in His absolute dominion, and all are dependent upon Him — so how could any of them be His offspring?
Then comes the decisive challenge: *"You have no proof for this!"* The word *Sulṭān* here means an authoritative proof or clear evidence. The polytheists had none — no revelation, no rational argument, no sign from creation to support their claim. It was nothing but baseless fabrication and blind imitation of their forefathers.
Finally, Allah condemns their audacity with a stern rebuke: *"Do you say about Allah what you do not know?"* This is a powerful reprimand — to speak about Allah without knowledge is a grave sin. How much worse is it to attribute to Him something so great and so false as having a son?
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse be a reminder of the greatness of our Lord. He is perfect in His attributes, free from every deficiency, and in need of nothing. Yet He created us, sustains us, and guides us — all out of His mercy and wisdom. When you reflect on the vastness of the heavens and the earth, on the intricate design of your own body and soul, you will see the hand of the One who needs no partner and no child.
So guard your tongue and your heart from speaking about Allah without knowledge. Instead, approach His Book and the authentic teachings of His final Messenger ﷺ with sincerity, and you will find the truth that sets your heart at peace. Allah has no need of you, but you are in desperate need of Him — so turn to Him, worship Him alone, and taste the sweetness of knowing your Creator as He truly is.
