Meanings of Key Words:
- Bawwa'nā (بَوَّأْنَا): We settled, established, or assigned a place of dwelling.
- Mubawwa'a sidq (مُبَوَّأَ صِدْقٍ): A place of truth, honor, and excellence — a praiseworthy and blessed abode.
- Al-Tayyibāt (الطَّيِّبَات): Pure, lawful, and wholesome provisions.
- Al-'Ilm (الْعِلْم): The knowledge of truth — here referring to the clear revelation (the Qur'an) and the signs confirming the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, reminds us in this verse of His great favors upon the Children of Israel. He settled them in a blessed and honorable land — the sacred region of Sham (Greater Syria) and Egypt — a place of security, fertility, and dignity. He provided them with pure and lawful sustenance, showering them with bounties from the good things of life. This was a manifestation of His grace and a test of their gratitude.
Yet, despite these immense blessings, they did not fall into disagreement and division until after the knowledge of truth had come to them. The clear signs, the scriptures, and the prophecies — including the explicit tidings of the final Messenger Muhammad ﷺ — were all within their reach. It was only after this knowledge arrived that they split into factions: some believed, some denied, and some distorted the truth out of envy and worldly desires. Their disagreement was not born of ignorance, but of stubbornness and transgression after certainty had been established.
This carries a profound lesson for us: when truth becomes clear, the responsibility to follow it becomes greater. Division after knowledge is far more blameworthy than disagreement before it. The Children of Israel were given every reason to unite upon the truth, yet they chose discord — and their history bears witness to the consequences.
Then Allah addresses His Prophet ﷺ and all believers with a word of immense comfort: "Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ." Nothing is lost, and nothing is forgotten. The ultimate justice belongs to Allah alone. On that Day, He will settle every dispute with perfect fairness — admitting the believers into Paradise and the deniers into the Fire. No wrongdoer will escape, and no righteous soul will be deprived.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse invites us to cherish the blessings of Allah and to guard against the disease of division after clarity. When guidance reaches you, hold fast to it with sincerity and unity. Do not let envy, pride, or worldly gain turn you away from the truth you already know. And when you see others differing, remember that the final judgment rests with Allah — so focus on your own obedience, seek knowledge with humility, and strive to be among those who unite upon righteousness rather than those who split after certainty.
Let this be a reminder that Allah's justice is perfect and His promise is true. The Hereafter is the ultimate court where every matter will be resolved. So live today with faith, gratitude, and harmony — for that is the path of those who truly understand.
