Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, this story of Yusuf (Joseph) that has just been recounted to you — from his childhood dream to his brothers’ jealousy, his trials in Egypt, and his eventual rise to power — is not something you learned from any book, nor did you witness it firsthand. You were not present among the people of that era, nor did you sit with the scholars of the Scriptures to acquire this knowledge. Rather, it is from the tidings of the unseen that Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, reveals to you as a divine communication. This is a profound miracle in itself: you, an unlettered man in a land far from Egypt and Canaan, are accurately narrating events that took place centuries before your birth, with precise details that match what was recorded in earlier revelations.
And you were not present with the brothers of Yusuf when they gathered to conspire against him. You did not see them as they hardened their hearts, agreed unanimously to cast their innocent brother into the dark depths of the well, and then devised their cunning lies to deceive their grieving father, Ya‘qub. You were not there when they returned at night weeping falsely, or when they produced the shirt stained with fake blood. Yet Allah, who witnessed all of this and knows every hidden intention, has conveyed it to you with perfect accuracy.
This verse serves as a powerful testament to your truthfulness and to the divine origin of the revelation you carry. No human being could have known such intricate details of a distant past without being taught by the One who is All-Knowing and All-Seeing. The One who witnessed the plotting of Yusuf’s brothers is the same One who now reveals it to you — and He is the same One who watches over you and your Ummah, protecting you from the schemes of those who plot against this religion.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse strengthen your certainty in the truth of Islam. The Qur’an is not a book of human authorship — it is the speech of the Creator, who knows the past, the present, and the future. Just as Allah revealed to His Prophet the hidden details of Yusuf’s story, He has revealed to us the complete guidance for our lives. The same Allah who protected Yusuf from the conspiracy of his brothers, who raised him from the darkness of the well to the heights of power, is capable of protecting you from every hardship and every plot against you. Place your trust in Him, hold fast to His Book, and know that His knowledge encompasses everything — nothing escapes Him, and His wisdom is perfect. The story of Yusuf is not merely a tale of the past; it is a living lesson that patience, faith, and reliance on Allah are the keys to victory, no matter how dark the circumstances may seem.
