Word Meanings:

  • "Ubarri'u" (أُبَرِّئُ): To declare oneself free from fault or blame; to absolve or exonerate oneself.
  • "Ammāratun" (أَمَّارَةٌ): That which persistently and strongly commands or urges; a soul that continuously incites toward wrongdoing.
  • "Bi's-sū'" (بِالسُّوءِ): Evil, sin, or that which is harmful and displeasing to Allah.
  • "Illā mā raḥima rabbī" (إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي): Except those whom my Lord has granted His mercy and protection.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, the wife of the Aziz (the minister of Egypt) continues her testimony before the king and the assembled dignitaries. After Yusuf (peace be upon him) had been vindicated and his innocence proven, she made this remarkable confession — not merely to clear Yusuf, but to speak a universal truth about the human soul.

She declares: *"And I do not absolve my own self."* This is a moment of extraordinary honesty and humility. She refuses to claim purity for herself, even though she could have easily shifted all blame and presented herself as a victim. Instead, she acknowledges her own role in the events that transpired.

Then she explains why she cannot claim innocence: *"Indeed, the soul is ever inclined to evil."* This is a profound psychological and spiritual truth. The human soul, when left to its own devices, naturally gravitates toward fulfilling its desires and whims — even when those desires lead to sin. It is not that every person is inherently evil, but rather that the soul has a tendency to command its owner toward wrongdoing, especially when passion overcomes reason and when the remembrance of Allah fades from the heart.

But then she adds an essential exception: *"Except those upon whom my Lord bestows His mercy."* Here lies the hope and the solution. The soul's inclination toward evil is not an inescapable fate. Allah's mercy can protect a person, strengthen their will, and guide them away from sin. It is through His grace — not through our own strength alone — that we overcome our lower desires.

She concludes with a beautiful affirmation of faith: *"Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."* Despite her acknowledgment of her own sinfulness, she does not despair. She knows that Allah's forgiveness is vast and that His mercy encompasses those who turn back to Him in sincere repentance.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every human being. It teaches us the balance between self-awareness and hope. On one hand, we must never become arrogant or self-righteous, believing ourselves to be beyond error. The greatest of people have acknowledged their weaknesses and sought Allah's help. On the other hand, we must never despair of Allah's mercy, no matter how great our sins may be.

This is the beauty of Islam — it does not demand perfection from us, but it calls us to sincerity, repentance, and continuous striving. The same Allah who knows our weaknesses is the One who says: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."* (Az-Zumar 39:53)

So let us not be deceived by our own souls' whispers, nor let us fall into despair when we stumble. Instead, let us constantly turn to Allah, seek His protection from our own weaknesses, and trust in His infinite mercy. For He is indeed the Forgiving, the Merciful — and His door of repentance is always open to those who knock with a sincere heart.

📜 Verse 51-55 — Yusuf

Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allah! We know about him no evil." The wife of al-'Azeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.
That is so al-'Azeez will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allah does not guide the plan of betrayers.
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."
[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."
