Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- لَسْتَ مُرْسَلًا (Lasta mursalan): "You are not a messenger" – a direct denial of the Prophet's ﷺ mission.
- كَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا (Kafā billāhi shahīdan): "Sufficient is Allah as a Witness" – meaning Allah’s testimony alone is enough to settle the matter.
- وَمَنْ عِندَهُ عِلْمُ الْكِتَابِ (Wa man ʿindahu ʿilmu l-kitāb): "And those who have knowledge of the Scripture" – referring to the scholars among the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) who recognized the Prophet ﷺ from their own scriptures.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers, out of arrogance and stubbornness, kept repeating their false claim: "O Muhammad, you are not a messenger sent by Allah." They refused to accept the truth despite all the clear signs and miracles that accompanied his mission. So Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ to respond to them with a decisive and powerful answer: "Say: Sufficient is Allah as a Witness between me and you."
This means: Allah Himself bears witness to the truth of my prophethood. He knows what is in my heart, He revealed this Qur'an to me, and He supported me with miracles that no human being could ever produce. His testimony is the greatest and most reliable of all testimonies. If Allah is my witness, then the denial of all deniers becomes meaningless.
Then Allah adds: "And those who have knowledge of the Scripture" – meaning the sincere scholars among the Jews and Christians who had studied their original, unaltered scriptures. They found the description of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clearly written in their books – his name, his attributes, his character, and the message he brought. When they recognized him, they believed in him and openly testified to his truthfulness. Their testimony, based on divine revelation that preceded the Qur'an, further confirms the authenticity of his message.
So the verse carries a profound message: The testimony of Allah is sufficient, and the testimony of the people of knowledge who followed the truth adds even more certainty. No amount of denial from the ignorant can change the reality of the truth.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in confidence and reliance on Allah. When people reject you or your message, you do not need to despair or seek validation from everyone. Allah is the ultimate Witness, and He never abandons His sincere servants. The truth stands firm regardless of how many people deny it.
Moreover, the verse invites us to reflect on the universality of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not a stranger to the previous divine messages – he was the fulfillment of their prophecies. The honest scholars of earlier scriptures recognized him because they were true to their own books. This shows that Islam is not a new religion that came to destroy what came before, but rather the completion and confirmation of the one true message of Allah to humanity.
So, dear reader, let this verse strengthen your faith. When you are upon the truth, you have the greatest support – Allah Himself. And when you encounter those who deny, remember that their denial does not diminish the truth; it only reveals their own loss. Be like those sincere scholars who, when they recognized the truth, did not hesitate to testify to it – even if it meant going against their own people. That is the mark of true knowledge: it leads to action and courageous testimony.
