Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Min warā'ihi" (مِّن وَرَائِهِ): Here, "warā'" means "in front of" or "ahead of," not "behind" as it often does. It signifies what lies before him, awaiting him in the Hereafter.
  • "Jahannam" (جَهَنَّمُ): Hellfire — the deepest and most severe level of Hell, prepared for the disbelievers and the arrogant.
  • "Mā' ṣadīd" (مَاءٍ صَدِيدٍ): A foul, putrid fluid — the pus, blood, and discharge that oozes from the bodies of the inhabitants of Hell. It is a drink that brings no relief, only torment.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

Imagine standing at the edge of a cliff, and directly before you — not behind, but right ahead — yawns an abyss of fire. That is the reality for the arrogant disbeliever on the Day of Judgment. Hellfire is not merely a distant threat; it is placed right in front of him, waiting to engulf him. He cannot escape it, for it is the inevitable outcome of his pride and rejection of the truth.

And what does he drink in this state of utter despair? He is given a drink — if it can even be called that — of *ṣadīd*: the foul, stinking pus and blood that seeps from the burning skins of the damned. This is not a drink to quench thirst; it is a drink to intensify suffering. Every sip burns his throat, every gulp adds to his agony, and yet his thirst remains unquenched. The torment is layered — the fire scorches his body, and the drink poisons his insides, leaving him in endless, compounding misery.

This verse paints a vivid picture of cause and effect. The one who exalted himself above God's guidance, who turned away from mercy and truth, now faces a humiliating end. His arrogance in this world is met with the lowest of states in the next. He is forced to drink what his own kind produce — the filth of Hell — as a direct consequence of the spiritual filth he clung to in life.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth. The Qur'an does not describe Hell to frighten you for no reason — it describes it to awaken you, to pull you back from the edge of ruin. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you this warning while you still have time. The door of repentance is open; the path of humility is before you. Do not let pride — the very trait that leads to this punishment — keep you away from your Lord. Bow to Him, seek His forgiveness, and taste the sweetness of faith now, so that you may never taste the *ṣadīd* of Hell. The choice is yours, and the time is now.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Ibrahim

And We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for he who fears My position and fears My threat."
And they requested victory from Allah, and disappointed, [therefore], was every obstinate tyrant.
Before him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.
He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.
The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.
