Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yastahibbūn (يَسْتَحِبُّونَ): They prefer and choose with desire and inclination.
  • Yasuddūn (يَصُدُّونَ): They turn away and prevent others.
  • Yabghūnahā ʿiwajan (يَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا): They seek to make it crooked and distorted, desiring that the path of Allah be deviated from its straightness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes those who turn away from the truth and refuse to believe in Allah and follow His messengers. They are characterized by three destructive traits:

First, they prefer the life of this world over the Hereafter. They choose the fleeting pleasures and temporary enjoyments of this worldly life, which will inevitably come to an end, while abandoning the eternal bliss of the Hereafter that never fades. They take whatever they can get from this world with haste, showing negligence toward the matters of the Hereafter, as if they have forgotten that this world is but a passing shadow and the Hereafter is the true, everlasting abode.

Second, they actively prevent people from following the path of Allah — the path of faith, righteousness, and submission to the Creator. They not only stray themselves but also block others from guidance, using every means to turn people away from the religion of Allah and the worship of their Lord.

Third, they seek to make the path of Allah crooked and distorted. They desire that the straight path — Islam — be deviated from its truth and justice, so that it aligns with their whims and desires. They spread doubts, fabricate falsehoods, and distort the truth so that no one would walk upon it.

The consequence: Those who possess these attributes are in far-reaching misguidance — a deviation so deep and profound that they have strayed far from every means of guidance and every path of righteousness. Their distance from the truth is so great that it becomes extremely difficult for them to return, for they have immersed themselves in falsehood and become accustomed to it.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: How great is the loss of those who trade the eternal bliss of Paradise for the fleeting pleasures of this world! How foolish is the one who abandons the everlasting for the temporary! Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made the path of guidance clear and straight, and He calls us to it with love and compassion. Yet these people not only reject it themselves but also strive to block others from it.

Let this verse be a reminder for us to examine our own hearts: Do we prefer what Allah has promised us in the Hereafter over the temporary attractions of this world? Do we strive to be among those who call others to the straight path, or among those who obstruct it?

The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy encompasses everything. Whoever turns back to Allah sincerely, Allah will forgive him and guide him to the straight path, no matter how far he has strayed. Do not let this world deceive you, for it is but a bridge to cross, not a home to settle in. The true home is with Allah — and what a wonderful home it is for those who are mindful of Him!

📜 Verse 1-5 — Ibrahim

Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -
Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe to the disbelievers from a severe punishment
The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allah, seeking to make it (seem) deviant. Those are in extreme error.
And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allah sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
