Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "اجْنُبْنِي" (wajnibni): Keep me away, distance me, and protect me from.
- "الأَصْنَامَ" (al-asnam): Idols — carved or sculpted images that were worshipped instead of Allah. (The term "awthan" refers to idols without a specific form, while "asnam" are those with a form.)
Tafsir (Explanation):
Remember, O Messenger, when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) — after settling his wife Hajar and his infant son Isma'il in the barren valley of Mecca by Allah's command — raised his hands in sincere supplication to his Lord. He prayed: "My Lord, make this city (Mecca) a land of peace and security, where no blood is shed unjustly and no one is wronged or oppressed." He then made a profound and heartfelt request: "And keep me and my descendants far away from worshipping idols."
This dua reflects Ibrahim's deep concern for the spiritual well-being of his progeny. He did not merely ask for worldly safety, but for the protection of faith itself — the greatest gift a parent can seek for their children. His words teach us that true security lies not only in physical safety but in the safety of one's heart and belief, guarded from every form of false worship and deviation.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse reveals the beautiful humility of a great prophet who, despite his immense station, did not rely on his own righteousness but turned to Allah in desperate prayer for himself and his family. It reminds us that no one is immune to misguidance except by Allah's mercy. As believers, we should follow Ibrahim's example by constantly supplicating for our own hearts and the hearts of our children, asking Allah to protect us from all forms of shirk — whether open, like worshipping idols, or hidden, like showing off in our deeds. Let this prayer be a shield for you and your loved ones, for the Prophet of Allah himself feared for his offspring, so how much more should we? Make this dua a part of your daily life, and trust that Allah, who answered Ibrahim, will answer those who call upon Him with sincerity.
