Surah Ibrahim — Verse 50

Word Meanings:

• Sarābīluhum (سَرَابِيلُهُم): Their garments or shirts.
• Qaṭirān (قَطِرَانٍ): A highly flammable substance—molten pitch, tar, or burning oil—traditionally used to treat mangy camels, which burns the skin and flesh.
• Taghshā (تَغْشَى): To cover or overwhelm entirely.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that dreadful Day, the garments of the disbelievers will be made of molten pitch—a substance so flammable that it ignites instantly and burns whatever it touches. Just as pitch was used in this world to sear the skin of diseased camels, it will now cling to their bodies as clothing, blazing against their flesh. And to complete their torment, the Fire will cover their faces entirely, wrapping around them from every side. Why their faces? Because in this life, they refused to turn their faces in humility toward their Creator, nor did they use their sight to reflect on His signs. They raised their heads in arrogance, so on that Day, the Fire will be the first thing to meet their gaze and shroud their features in agony.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the fate that awaits those who reject the truth—yet it also carries a profound lesson for us. Our clothing in this world is a blessing from Allah, protecting us and giving us dignity. But on that Day, the disbelievers' clothing will become a source of punishment. Let us reflect: how do we use the blessings of Allah? Do we clothe ourselves with gratitude and obedience, or do we cover ourselves with heedlessness and sin? The Qur'an invites us to turn back to Allah now, before that Day comes when no garment can shield us, and no face can hide from the Fire. Embrace His mercy today, for He is the Most Forgiving, and His door of repentance remains open until the final hour.
