Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bashar (بشرًا): A human being — specifically referring to Adam (peace be upon him), the father of mankind.
  • Salsal (صلصال): Dry, hardened clay that produces a sound when struck or tapped, like the sound of pottery.
  • Hama’ (حمإ): Black, foul-smelling mud that has changed in color and odor due to prolonged exposure.
  • Masnun (مسنون): Altered and transformed — clay that has changed from its original state, becoming dark and emitting an unpleasant smell.

Tafsir (Interpretation):

O Prophet, remind yourself and your people of the profound moment when your Lord announced to the angels — and Iblis was present among them — His majestic decree: “I am creating a human being from dry, ringing clay, derived from black, foul-smelling mud that has been transformed over time.”

This verse unveils the noble origin of humanity — not a random accident, but a deliberate, divine act of creation. Allah informed the angels of His intention before forming Adam, highlighting the honor and purpose embedded in human existence. The description of the clay — dry, sounding, dark, and altered — emphasizes the humble earthly material from which man was fashioned, yet it is precisely this humble origin that magnifies the miracle of Allah’s creative power: from such lowly substance, He breathed life, intellect, and spirit.

The mention of this announcement serves as a reminder of the sacredness of the human being — that we were created by Allah’s own hand, with a noble mission, and that our existence is not trivial. It also sets the stage for the great test that followed: the command to prostrate before Adam, which would expose the arrogance of Iblis and the obedience of the angels.

Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate this verse deeply: the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all worlds, paused to announce His creation of you — of humanity — to His most honored angels. This alone tells you how precious you are in His sight. You were not created in vain, nor were you left without purpose. Your existence is a deliberate act of divine love and wisdom. When you realize that your very origin was announced in the heavenly assembly, you understand that your life carries weight and meaning. So turn to your Lord, the One who fashioned you with His own hands, and ask Him to guide you to the purpose He designed for you. He did not create you to abandon you — He created you to know Him, worship Him, and attain His mercy. Will you not respond to such a generous call?

📜 Verse 26-30 — Al-Hijr

And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.
And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.
And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,
