Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Ātaynāhum" (آتَيْنَاهُمْ): We gave/bestowed upon them.
  • "Āyātinā" (آيَاتِنَا): Our signs, miracles, and clear proofs.
  • "Muʿriḍīn" (مُعْرِضِينَ): Turning away, ignoring, avoiding with disregard and indifference.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah Almighty tells us about the people of Thamud, to whom Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was sent. Allah granted them numerous signs and miracles that proved the truth of Salih's message. Among the most prominent of these signs was the miraculous she-camel that emerged from a solid rock as a clear proof of Allah's power and Salih's prophethood.

These signs were not ambiguous or hidden—they were clear, visible, and undeniable. The she-camel was a living miracle, drinking from their water and serving as a constant reminder of the truth. Yet, despite all these clear evidences, the people of Thamud did not reflect upon them, did not take heed, and did not allow these signs to soften their hearts or guide their minds. Instead, they deliberately turned away, ignored them, and paid no attention whatsoever.

The verse highlights a profound human tragedy: when people are given clear guidance and undeniable proofs, yet they choose to turn away out of arrogance, stubbornness, or attachment to their worldly desires. They did not merely reject the signs—they avoided them, distanced themselves from them, and refused to even contemplate their meaning.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. Allah sends us signs every single day—in the beauty of nature, in the precision of our own bodies, in the unfolding of events in our lives, and most importantly, in the verses of the Qur'an. The question is: are we like those who turn away, or are we among those who reflect and respond?

The people of Thamud had a miracle right before their eyes, yet they ignored it. Today, we have the Qur'an—a living miracle that has remained unchanged for over 1400 years—and we have the universe around us, filled with countless signs. Do we take the time to ponder over them? Do we let them transform our hearts and guide our actions?

Let us not be among those who are described as "muʿriḍīn" (turning away). Instead, let us be people who embrace the signs of Allah with open hearts, who reflect deeply, and who respond with gratitude and obedience. For when we turn to Allah with sincerity, He opens for us doors of wisdom, peace, and success in this life and the Hereafter. The choice is ours—will we turn away, or will we turn to Him?

📜 Verse 79-83 — Al-Hijr

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.
And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.
And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
But the shriek seized them at early morning.
