Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ashab al-Hijr (أصحاب الحجر): The people of the rocky tract or stone valley — this refers to the tribe of Thamud, who lived in a region between the Hijaz and Syria (modern-day Mada'in Salih in Saudi Arabia).
- Al-Hijr (الحجر): The rocky valley or stony land where the Thamud dwelt.
- Al-Mursalin (المرسلين): The messengers — here referring to Prophet Salih (peace be upon him), but the plural form is used to indicate that rejecting one messenger is equivalent to rejecting all of them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah Almighty informs us in this verse about the fate of the people of Thamud — the inhabitants of the rocky valley known as Al-Hijr, located between the Hijaz and Syria. These people rejected their prophet, Salih (peace be upon him), who was sent to them with clear signs and miracles, including the miraculous she-camel that came forth from the rock as a test for them.
By denying Salih, they are described as having denied all the messengers. This is because all prophets — from the first to the last — conveyed the same essential message: the oneness of Allah and submission to Him alone. Therefore, whoever rejects one prophet has in essence rejected the entire prophetic mission, for they are all brothers in faith and callers to the same truth.
The mention of "the messengers" in the plural here serves as a powerful lesson: the unity of the prophetic message means that the rejection of one is the rejection of all. The people of Thamud did not merely reject Salih as an individual; they rejected the very concept of prophethood and divine guidance.
This verse serves as a warning to all who hear it: beware of rejecting the messengers of Allah, for such rejection carries the same weight whether directed at one prophet or all of them. The punishment that followed the Thamud — the mighty blast and the earthquake that destroyed them — stands as an eternal reminder of the consequences of arrogance and disbelief.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The people of Al-Hijr were given extraordinary blessings — they carved their homes into mountains with great skill and lived in prosperity. Yet when the truth came to them, they turned away with pride. Their story is not merely history; it is a mirror for every generation. Allah's messengers are many, but their message is one. When you accept the final messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), you are accepting all the prophets before him. And when you follow his guidance, you are following the path of every righteous soul who ever lived.
This verse invites you to reflect: How do you respond to the messengers of Allah? Do you accept their call with humility and gratitude, or do you turn away with arrogance? The choice you make determines not only your fate in this world but your eternal destiny in the Hereafter. Embrace the message of truth while there is still time, for the door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast — but His punishment for those who persist in rejection is severe. Let the story of the people of Al-Hijr be a lesson that softens your heart and guides you to the straight path.
