Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khazā'in (خَزَائِنَ): Storehouses or treasuries containing abundant provisions and blessings.
- Rahmati (رَحْمَةِ): Mercy, which here refers to Allah's provisions, sustenance, and all forms of blessings He bestows upon creation.
- Amsaktum (أَمْسَكْتُمْ): You would have withheld or held back.
- Khashyat al-Infāq (خَشْيَةَ الْإِنفَاقِ): Fear of spending, i.e., the fear that giving away would lead to depletion and poverty.
- Qatūrā (قَتُورًا): Extremely stingy, miserly, or tight-fisted.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to these polytheists who deny Allah's blessings and question His provision: Even if you were given full ownership of the treasuries of your Lord's mercy—those boundless storehouses of sustenance, rain, wealth, health, and every blessing that never run dry—you would still clutch them tightly and refuse to spend from them, out of fear that they might diminish and leave you in need. Such is the nature of man: he is inherently miserly and tight-fisted, clinging to what he possesses, unless Allah grants him faith and purifies his soul, enabling him to spend generously in hope of Allah's reward.
This verse exposes the reality of human weakness and stinginess, reminding us that all provision comes solely from Allah, the Most Generous, who gives without measure and never withholds out of fear of depletion. It also serves as a profound lesson: if humans, with their limited nature, would hoard even the treasures of divine mercy, how can they ever be entrusted with such blessings? Yet Allah, in His infinite kindness, continues to pour His mercy upon His servants despite their shortcomings.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, ponder this: Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, owns everything and gives freely, never fearing loss. He opens His gates of mercy to you every single day—the air you breathe, the food you eat, the health you enjoy—all without you asking or deserving. So why do we hesitate to give even a small portion of what He has entrusted to us? Why do we fear poverty when the One who provides for the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea has promised to provide for us?
Let this verse soften your heart and free you from the chains of stinginess. Open your hand in charity, for every coin you spend in the path of Allah is a seed that He multiplies beyond your imagination. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Charity does not decrease wealth" (Muslim). So be generous, for Allah loves those who give, and He has promised them a reward that never ends. Do not let the whispers of Shaytan make you fear poverty, for Allah is the Provider, the Most Generous, and His mercy encompasses all things.
