Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Dakka' (دَكَّاء): Leveled completely to the ground, flattened until it becomes like a plain surface with no elevation.
- Wa'd Rabbi (وَعْدُ رَبِّي): The promise of my Lord — referring to the appointed time when Gog and Magog (Ya'juj and Ma'juj) will be released before the Day of Judgment.
- Haqqan (حَقًّا): True, certain, and inevitable — something that will undoubtedly come to pass.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Dhul-Qarnayn completed the mighty barrier of iron and molten copper, he spoke these profound words, acknowledging the true source of all power and blessing. He said: "This barrier is a mercy from my Lord" — not a personal achievement or a product of his own might, but a divine favor bestowed upon him and upon the people. This barrier serves as a protective shield, preventing Gog and Magog from spreading corruption and destruction across the land. It is a mercy that keeps chaos at bay and preserves the safety of nations.
Yet, Dhul-Qarnayn — despite his immense power and the colossal structure he built — did not fall into the illusion of permanence. He immediately added: "But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will level it to the ground." This is a profound lesson in humility and faith. No matter how strong, how well-constructed, or how impenetrable a thing may seem, it is ultimately subject to the will of Allah. The very barrier that stood as an invincible fortress will one day be flattened like dust when Allah decrees the hour of Gog and Magog's release.
And then he affirmed with certainty: "And the promise of my Lord is true." This statement is a declaration of unwavering faith. Allah's promise is not like the promises of humans — it is absolute, certain, and free from any possibility of failure or delay beyond His wisdom. What Allah has decreed will surely happen, whether it is the release of Gog and Magog, the establishment of the Hour, or the final reckoning of all creation.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect deeply upon this verse. Here is a king of immense power who conquered lands and built wonders, yet he remained a humble servant, attributing every blessing to his Lord and acknowledging his own limitations before the divine will. This is the essence of true faith — to recognize that all power belongs to Allah alone, and that every blessing we enjoy is a mercy from Him.
How often do we forget this? We build our lives, our careers, our relationships, and our security, and we begin to feel invincible. But the truth is that everything we have is a trust from Allah, and everything we build can be leveled in an instant if He so wills. This should not frighten us, but rather draw us closer to Him. It should inspire us to be grateful for His mercies, to remain humble in our achievements, and to prepare for the inevitable meeting with our Lord.
The promise of Allah is true — this is the anchor of the believer's heart. When the world around us seems unstable, when trials overwhelm us, when the future seems uncertain, we hold firmly to this truth: Allah's promise never fails. He promised Paradise to the righteous, and He will fulfill it. He promised victory to His believing servants, and He will fulfill it. He promised that this world is temporary and the Hereafter is eternal, and that too is an absolute certainty.
So, dear believer, take this lesson from Dhul-Qarnayn: attribute your successes to Allah's mercy, never become arrogant in your strength, and always live with the awareness that the promise of your Lord is true. Let this awareness transform your heart into one that is grateful, humble, and ever-prepared for the meeting with its Creator. For indeed, the greatest success is to be among those who believed in Allah's promise and lived their lives accordingly.
