Tafsir (Explanation):
After the pains of childbirth subsided, Allah comforted Maryam (peace be upon her) with a command full of mercy and reassurance: *"So eat and drink and be contented."* She was told to eat from the fresh ripe dates that had been provided for her, to drink from the flowing stream, and to let her heart be at peace with the blessing she had received — her son Isa (peace be upon him). Her eyes were to be cooled with joy, for Allah had already cleared her name and would protect her from any false accusation.
Then Allah instructed her on how to handle the inevitable encounter with people who would question her. If she saw anyone from among mankind and they asked her about her situation, she was to say: *"Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful a fast."* This was not a fast from food and drink, but a sacred vow of silence — a practice that was legitimate in the law of that time. By declaring this, she would not need to explain herself, because her infant son, by Allah's will, would speak and defend her honor. She was to add: *"So I will not speak today to any human being."* This was a divine strategy to protect her from futile arguments with foolish people and to let the miracle of Isa's speech be the proof of her innocence.
This verse teaches us profound lessons: that Allah never abandons His righteous servants in their moments of trial. Just as He provided for Maryam in the desert, He provides for us in our times of need — often in ways we least expect. It also shows the importance of trusting Allah's plan completely, even when circumstances seem impossible. The command to eat, drink, and be joyful after hardship is a beautiful reminder that after every difficulty comes ease, and that gratitude for Allah's blessings is the key to inner peace. For the believers today, this story strengthens our faith in Allah's power and His care for those who sincerely turn to Him.
