Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لَا يَمْلِكُونَ (They do not possess): They have no power or authority.
  • الشَّفَاعَةَ (Intercession): The act of pleading on behalf of another to secure benefit or avert harm.
  • اتَّخَذَ (Has taken/made): Has established and firmly held.
  • عَهْدًا (A covenant): A pledge of faith and obedience, specifically the covenant of Tawheed (monotheism) and sincere belief.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that Day of Judgment, when every soul stands before its Lord in utter humility, the disbelievers—those who rejected Allah, His messengers, and His signs—will possess absolutely no power to intercede for anyone, not even for their own kin or beloved ones. They will be stripped of every means of influence, and their hopes for salvation through others will be shattered.

Intercession on that Day belongs exclusively to those who, during their worldly life, took a covenant with Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful). This covenant is none other than the pledge of sincere faith—believing in Allah alone, worshipping Him without partners, and following His messengers with true submission. These are the believers who lived by the testimony of La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) and died upon it. For them, and only for them, will intercession be granted—and even then, it will only occur by Allah's explicit permission, and only for those whom He is pleased to forgive.

So the verse carries both a stern warning and a glorious hope: the warning is that no worldly status, wealth, or lineage will avail anyone without faith; the hope is that the door of intercession is open for those who sincerely uphold their covenant with their Lord, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Generous, who never breaks His promise to His faithful servants.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect on the most precious transaction you can ever make in this fleeting life: taking a covenant with your Creator. Today, while you still draw breath, you have the opportunity to secure an intercessor for the Day when no wealth or children will benefit anyone—except those who come to Allah with a sound heart. Do not delay this covenant. Renew your faith, purify your worship, and follow the final Messenger, peace be upon him, so that on that awesome Day, you may be among those granted the honor of intercession, not among those who stand helpless and bereft. The Most Merciful has opened His door wide—will you not enter before it closes?
