Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Nasūqu" (وَنَسُوقُ): We drive or herd forcefully, like cattle being driven with intensity and severity.
  • "Al-Mujrimīn" (الْمُجْرِمِينَ): The criminals — those who persisted in disbelief, polytheism, and sin against Allah.
  • "Jahannam" (جَهَنَّمَ): Hellfire, the severe punishment prepared for the disbelievers.
  • "Wirdan" (وِرْدًا): A thirsty state; they are driven to Hell while suffering from extreme thirst, like a herd being led to a watering place — but here, the water is boiling fire.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that Day of Judgment, the scene is one of absolute contrast. While the righteous are gathered with honor and dignity before their Most Merciful Lord, the criminals — those who rejected Allah, His messengers, and His signs — are driven to Hell with harshness and humiliation. They are not carried or escorted gently; rather, they are herded like a thirsty flock, walking on their own feet, parched and exhausted, their necks stretched and cracked from the agony of thirst.

The word "wirdan" carries a powerful image: in this life, a "wird" is when a herd of animals is led to water to quench their thirst. But for the criminals, their "watering place" is Hellfire itself. They are driven to it, not out of mercy, but as a fulfillment of justice. Their thirst is unbearable, yet what awaits them is not cool water but boiling, scalding liquid that will tear their insides.

This verse reminds us that Allah’s justice is perfect. No one who did wrong will escape, and no one who did right will be forgotten. The criminals who lived arrogantly on earth, denying the truth and oppressing others, will find themselves in the lowest state — driven, humiliated, and desperate.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine that scene for a moment: the heat, the thirst, the regret. But know that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you the chance *now* — before that Day arrives — to turn back to Him. He has opened the door of repentance wide. He does not wish to punish you; He wishes to forgive you and shower you with His mercy.

The same Lord who will drive the criminals to Hell is the One who calls out to you today: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So do not let your sins make you lose hope. Return to Him, embrace His guidance, and you will be among those who are gathered to Him with honor, not among those driven to fire.

Choose today which group you wish to belong to — the honored guests of the Most Merciful, or the thirsty criminals of Hell. The choice is yours, and the time is now.
