Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes those who have turned away from the path of guidance after having been clearly shown the truth. They are the ones who break the covenant of Allah — the sacred pledge that every soul made with its Lord before coming into this world, when Allah asked: "Am I not your Lord?" and they answered: "Yes, we bear witness." This covenant was further reinforced through the sending of prophets and the revelation of divine books, all calling humanity to worship Allah alone and to obey His commands.
These people do not merely neglect this covenant; they actively break it after it has been firmly established. They then go further by severing what Allah has commanded to be joined — this includes maintaining family ties (silat al-rahim), believing in all of Allah's messengers without discrimination, and upholding the unity of the Muslim community. By rejecting some messengers or some divine teachings, they cut the very bonds that Allah has ordered to be preserved.
Moreover, they spread corruption upon the earth through acts of disobedience, turning people away from the path of faith, and promoting immorality and injustice wherever they go. Their corruption is not limited to their own souls; it extends to society, breaking its cohesion and poisoning its moral fabric.
Allah declares with absolute certainty: "Those are the losers." Their loss is comprehensive — in this worldly life, they lose peace of mind, true success, and the blessings of strong family and community bonds; and in the Hereafter, they lose the ultimate prize: the pleasure of Allah and the eternal bliss of Paradise. They have traded an everlasting treasure for a fleeting illusion.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth. Your covenant with Allah is not a burden — it is the key to your success and inner peace. When you honor this covenant by worshipping Allah alone, maintaining family ties, and spreading goodness, you align yourself with the very purpose of your creation. The losers described in this verse are not those who stumble and repent; they are those who persist in breaking their bond with their Creator while spreading harm. Allah's door of mercy is always open — return to Him today, strengthen your ties with family, and become a source of reform rather than corruption. The choice is yours: will you be among the successful who keep their covenant, or among the losers who break it? Your heart already knows the answer.
