Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ash-Shafā‘ah (الشَّفَاعَةُ): Intercession — the act of pleading on behalf of another to secure a benefit or avert a harm.
- Adhina (أَذِنَ): Granted permission — meaning Allah alone gives the exclusive leave to intercede.
- Raḍiya (رَضِيَ): Was pleased — indicating divine approval of the person and their statement.
- Qawl (قَوْلًا): Speech or utterance — specifically referring to the word of sincere faith.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that tremendous Day — the Day of Resurrection — no intercession will be of any benefit to anyone, no matter how noble or beloved the intercessor may be, and no matter how desperate the one seeking intercession becomes. All doors of hope will be sealed except for one single door: the door of Allah’s mercy and permission. Intercession will only be accepted when two conditions are met: first, that the Most Merciful (Ar-Raḥmān) has granted explicit permission to the intercessor to speak on behalf of another; and second, that He is pleased with the one being interceded for — and that pleasure is tied to their sincere utterance of faith, the testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah (Lā ilāha illallāh), spoken with a truthful heart and righteous deeds to support it.
This verse strips away every false hope people may cling to — no lineage, no wealth, no status, no “holy man” can save anyone on that Day unless Allah wills it. It teaches us that the only currency that matters in the Hereafter is Allah’s pleasure, and that pleasure is earned in this life through sincere faith and righteous action. The Prophet ﷺ will intercede for his nation, the angels will intercede, and the martyrs and righteous will intercede — but all of that is only by Allah’s leave and only for those whom He loves.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call wrapped in mercy. It tells you that your salvation is not in the hands of any creature — it is in the hands of the Creator alone. So do not waste your life chasing the approval of people, for their approval will not avail you on that Day. Instead, chase the pleasure of Allah: purify your heart, make your faith sincere, and let your tongue and limbs testify to the truth of “Lā ilāha illallāh” through your actions. The door of intercession is open for the people of sincerity — so be among them today, before that Day arrives when no plea will be heard except by His permission. What a beautiful religion that gives us hope even in the face of the greatest terror, and what a merciful Lord who grants His believing servants such honor!
