Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah commanded Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) to depart by night with the Children of Israel, and after Musa struck the sea with his staff by divine command—causing it to part into towering paths of dry land—Pharaoh could not bear the thought of losing his slaves and his authority. So he set out in hot pursuit, leading his mighty armies, driven by arrogance and rage. He chased them until they reached the very edge of the sea.
But the moment of divine justice had arrived. As Musa and his people crossed safely to the other shore, the sea—which had stood still in obedience to Allah's will—returned to its natural state. It surged and crashed over Pharaoh and his entire host, covering them completely. The Qur'an describes this with the profound phrase: "what covered them" —a mystery of horror and destruction whose true extent no human mind can fathom. They were swallowed by the deep, drowning in humiliation, while Musa and the believers watched the power of their Lord unfold.
This verse carries a timeless lesson: no matter how great a tyrant's army, no matter how vast his resources, he can never escape the decree of Allah. The same sea that was a path of salvation for the faithful became a grave of destruction for the arrogant. It reminds us that victory belongs to those who trust in Allah and obey His command, even when the odds seem impossible. And it warns every oppressor that their power is but a fleeting shadow compared to the might of the Almighty.
For the believer, this scene is a source of immense hope and courage. When you stand for truth, Allah will make a way out of every hardship—just as He split the sea for Musa. And when you see falsehood raging, know that its end is already written: it will be drowned in its own pride. So hold firm to your faith, for the promise of Allah is true, and His help is always near.
