Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَوَلَّوْا (tawallaw): They turn away and reject.
- آذَنتُكُمْ (ādhentukum): I have informed you and made it known to you.
- عَلَىٰ سَوَاءٍ (ʿalā sawāʾ): On equal footing — meaning we are now equal in knowledge; no one has an excuse.
- وَإِنْ أَدْرِي (wa-in udrī): And I do not know.
- مَا تُوعَدُونَ (mā tūʿadūn): What you are promised — i.e., the punishment or the Hour.
Tafsir (Explanation):
If these people turn away from the message of truth after it has been clearly conveyed to them, then O Prophet, say to them: "I have made the matter clear to you. I have delivered the warning openly and equally — you and I now stand on the same ground. There is no hidden agenda, no secret threat. I have fulfilled my duty of conveying the truth to you, and from this moment on, you have no excuse before Allah."
Then comes the profound statement: "And I do not know whether what you are promised is near or far." This is not a sign of ignorance on the part of the Prophet — rather, it is a declaration of the absolute knowledge belonging to Allah alone. The Prophet ﷺ does not know when the punishment will strike, whether it will come soon or after a long time. This uncertainty itself is a source of awe and fear: the threat is real, but its timing is unknown. This is far more terrifying than a fixed date, because the believer remains vigilant, and the disbeliever remains in anxiety.
The wisdom here is beautiful: the Prophet has done his part — clear warning, equal announcement, no ambiguity. What remains is in the Hands of Allah. The Prophet is not a punisher; he is a warner. And the One who has promised the punishment is the One who knows its appointed time.
Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ, despite being the most beloved of creation to Allah, did not claim knowledge of the unseen. He submitted fully to Allah's will and timing. This teaches us humility: we do not control outcomes, we only control our efforts. When you invite others to Islam, deliver the message with clarity and sincerity, then leave the result to Allah. Do not be disheartened by rejection — the Prophet ﷺ himself faced it, and his response was one of dignity, patience, and trust in Allah.
Moreover, the verse reminds us that the Hereafter is certain, but its timing is unknown. This uncertainty is a mercy — it keeps the believer in a state of readiness and the heedless in a state of caution. So hasten to repent, hasten to good deeds, and never delay your return to Allah, for the promised Day may be nearer than you think.
