Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rawāsi (رَوَاسِي): Firm, immovable mountains that are deeply rooted and stabilize the earth.
- Tamīda (تَمِيدَ): To sway, shake, or be restless.
- Fijāj (فِجَاج): Wide, open pathways or mountain passes.
- Subul (سُبُلًا): Roads, routes, or ways (plural of *sabīl*).
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) draws our attention to His magnificent design of the earth we inhabit. He declares that He placed upon the earth firm, towering mountains as stabilizers — anchors that prevent the earth from shaking and swaying with its inhabitants. This is a sign of His perfect wisdom and care: without these geological stabilizers, life upon the earth would be fraught with constant turmoil and instability.
Furthermore, Allah made within these mountains and across the land wide, open pathways and routes — natural corridors and passes that allow people to travel, trade, and reach their destinations with ease. This is not merely a physical blessing but a profound mercy, enabling human civilization to flourish, communities to connect, and people to access their livelihoods.
The verse concludes with the purpose of all this: "so that they may be guided" (laʿallahum yahtadūn). This guidance is twofold: first, to guide people in their worldly journeys — finding their way through the earth to fulfill their needs; and second, and more importantly, to guide them to reflect upon the Creator’s power and wisdom, leading them to the recognition of His Oneness and the truth of His message.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and contemplate: Who placed these mountains as pegs? Who carved these pathways through rugged terrain? It is Allah alone — the All-Wise, the All-Knowing. Every mountain you see, every road you travel, is a living sign pointing to His greatness and His mercy toward His creation. He did not create this world in vain; He created it as a home for you, filled with stability and provision, so that you might know Him, worship Him, and live a life of purpose.
When you walk upon the earth, let your heart remember: the One who made the ground firm beneath your feet is the same One who sent down His guidance to illuminate your soul. Just as He provided physical pathways for your journey, He has provided spiritual pathways through His prophets and scriptures. Will you not take the greatest journey of all — the journey toward your Creator? Open your heart to His signs, and you will find the ultimate guidance that leads to eternal success in this life and the Hereafter.
