Word Meanings:

  • Miryah (مِرْيَةٍ): Doubt, skepticism, or uncertainty.
  • Minhu (مِنْهُ): About it — referring to the Qur'an.
  • Baghtatan (بَغْتَةً): Suddenly, without any prior warning.
  • Aqeem (عَقِيمٍ): Literally "barren" — a day that brings no good, no relief, and no mercy; a day that is utterly destructive and fruitless for the disbelievers.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses the persistent state of the disbelievers who reject the message of the Qur'an brought by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They remain entrenched in doubt and skepticism about the Qur'an, never truly accepting its truth, no matter how many signs or proofs are presented to them. Their hearts are sealed against guidance, and they continue in this state of uncertainty and denial.

This stubborn disbelief will persist until one of two inevitable events overtakes them: either the Hour (the Day of Judgment) will come upon them suddenly, catching them completely off guard while they are still in their state of denial, or the punishment of a "barren day" will seize them — a day that offers no benefit, no escape, and no mercy. According to many scholars, this refers to the Day of Badr, when the disbelievers were struck with a humiliating defeat and destruction, or it refers to the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, which will be a day of utter despair for those who rejected the truth.

The verse serves as a powerful reminder that doubt and rejection of divine revelation do not go unpunished. Allah gives respite, but He does not neglect. The disbelievers may think they are safe in their skepticism, but the reality is that their end is sealed — either sudden death or the terrifying Day of Judgment will bring them face to face with the truth they once mocked.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: the Qur'an is not a book of mere stories or poetry — it is the living word of Allah, a guidance that calls you to success in this life and the next. Do not let doubt creep into your heart, for doubt is the weapon of Shaytan and the path to ruin. The disbelievers of old were given every chance to believe, yet they chose skepticism until the very end — and what a tragic end it was!

Open your heart to the Qur'an today. Let its verses illuminate your soul and guide your steps. The Hour will come suddenly — no one knows when — but you have the opportunity *now* to embrace the truth, to worship your Creator, and to secure your place in eternal bliss. Do not wait until it is too late, for when that barren day arrives, there will be no second chances. Embrace faith, and let the Qur'an be your companion, your light, and your salvation. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open — so hasten to it before the inevitable comes.

📜 Verse 53-57 — Al-Hajj

[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.
And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.
But those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren Day.
[All] sovereignty that Day is for Allah; He will judge between them. So they who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Pleasure.
And they who disbelieved and denied Our signs - for those there will be a humiliating punishment.
