📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ard (الأرض): The earth, the entire planet and all that is upon it.
  • Man fiha (مَن فيها): All creatures dwelling on the earth — humans, animals, jinn, and every living being.
  • In kuntum ta‘lamun (إن كنتم تعلمون): If you truly know or possess any certain knowledge.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, Allah commands you to pose a decisive question to those who deny the resurrection and reject the truth: "To whom does this earth belong, and to whom belongs everything and everyone upon it — if you have any knowledge at all?"

This is not a question seeking information, for they already know the answer deep within their hearts. It is a rhetorical question designed to awaken their innate nature (fitrah) and force them to acknowledge what their own conscience affirms. Every sane person, regardless of their beliefs, knows that this earth — with its mountains, oceans, skies, and all living creatures — did not create itself. It must have a Creator, an Owner, a Sustainer.

The verse challenges them gently yet firmly: if you claim to have knowledge, then answer this simple question. And the inevitable answer, which even the polytheists of Makkah would not deny, is: "Allah." They never claimed that idols created the heavens and the earth; they only worshipped idols as intermediaries. So the Qur'an uses their own admission against them — if Allah alone is the Owner and Creator of all that exists, then He alone deserves worship, and He alone has the power to resurrect the dead, just as He created them the first time.

This verse is a call to reflect on the grandeur of Allah's creation. Look at the earth beneath your feet — its vastness, its order, its provision of sustenance. Look at the billions of creatures upon it, each with its own life, purpose, and design. Could all of this be without an Owner? Could it run without a Manager? Absolutely not. The very existence of the earth and its inhabitants is living proof of Allah's existence, His power, and His sole right to be worshipped.

Dear reader, this verse invites you to pause and ponder. When you see the earth and all that fills it, let your heart rise to its Creator. Let this reflection strengthen your faith, increase your gratitude, and remind you that the One who owns everything is the One who will bring all things back to life on the Day of Judgment. So turn to Him sincerely, submit to Him alone, and find peace in knowing that you belong to the Most Merciful, the Most Powerful — the true Owner of the earth and everything upon it.
