Key Words and Meanings:

  • Al-Samāwāt al-Sabʿ (السماوات السبع): The seven heavens, the celestial realms created by Allah in layers, one above the other.
  • Al-ʿArsh al-ʿAẓīm (العرش العظيم): The Mighty Throne, the greatest and most immense of all creation, which encompasses the heavens and the earth, and upon which Allah’s sovereignty is established in a manner befitting His majesty.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to pose a profound question to the disbelievers of Makkah—a question that stirs the conscience and awakens the innate recognition of the truth. He says: "Say, O Muhammad, to these people: Who is the Lord of the seven heavens, with all their vastness, stars, planets, and angels? And who is the Lord of the Mighty Throne, that supreme creation which surpasses all else in magnitude and glory, towering above everything that exists?"

The question is not asked out of ignorance, but as a rhetorical device to lead them to acknowledge the undeniable reality. Every human being, even the most stubborn polytheist, knows in the depths of his heart that the Creator of these heavens and the Throne is none other than Allah alone. No idol, no stone, no celestial body, and no human being has any share in this creation. The heavens did not raise themselves, nor did the Throne come into being by chance—they are the handiwork of a single, all-powerful Creator.

This verse is a gentle yet powerful call to reflection. It invites the reader to lift their gaze to the sky, to contemplate the order, beauty, and perfection of the universe, and to realize that such grandeur cannot be the product of multiple gods or blind nature. The mention of the Throne specifically highlights Allah’s absolute sovereignty and His complete control over all affairs. Nothing escapes His dominion, and everything—from the smallest atom to the vastest cosmos—is under His command.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and ponder: Who is it that holds the heavens in place without pillars? Who is it that sustains the Throne and all that it carries? Who is it that manages the affairs of every creature, from the rising of the sun to the falling of a leaf? It is Allah—the One, the Unique, the Eternal. This verse is an invitation to return to that natural faith which every soul carries within it, the faith in a single Creator. When you recognize this truth, your heart finds peace, your purpose becomes clear, and your life is filled with meaning. Embrace this truth, submit to your Lord, and you will find a tranquility that nothing in this world can provide. For the One who created the heavens and the Throne is surely capable of hearing your prayers, answering your calls, and guiding you to everlasting success.
