Word Meanings:

  • Fattaqullāh (فاتقوا الله): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and guard yourselves against His punishment by fulfilling His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • Wa Aṭīʿūn (وأطيعون): And obey me — meaning obey Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) in what he conveyed from Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the address of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) to his people, the Thamūd. He calls them to the essence of true faith and righteous conduct. The command "fear Allah" is a comprehensive call to taqwā — that profound consciousness of Allah that permeates every action, thought, and intention. It means to place Allah’s commands above personal desires, to abstain from what He has forbidden, and to remain steadfast in what He has ordained.

Then he adds, "and obey me" — meaning obey me in what I have brought to you from Allah, for my obedience is not for my own sake, but it is the path to Allah’s pleasure and salvation. This obedience encompasses following the message of monotheism, moral integrity, and the laws that ensure justice and mercy in society.

Prophet Ṣāliḥ’s call was not a demand for personal loyalty or worldly gain; rather, it was a sincere invitation to the path of Allah — a path that leads to peace in this life and eternal success in the Hereafter. He reminded them that he sought no reward from them for his guidance; his reward was solely with the Lord of all worlds. This highlights the purity of prophetic mission — a mission driven by compassion and concern for the welfare of the people, not by any material or selfish motive.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This noble verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us that true success lies in the harmony between fearing Allah and following His messengers. When we combine taqwā with obedience to divine guidance, our lives become anchored in purpose, our hearts find tranquility, and our communities flourish with justice and compassion.

Dear reader, Allah’s call to you today is the same call He made through His prophets: to fear Him and to follow His guidance. This is not a burden — it is a mercy. It is the key to unlocking peace within yourself, harmony in your family, and blessings in your livelihood. When you obey Allah and His Messenger, you are not losing your freedom; you are liberating yourself from the chaos of desires and the traps of this world.

Let this verse inspire you to renew your commitment to Allah. Start with small, sincere steps: pray your five daily prayers, speak the truth, and treat others with kindness. Every act of obedience brings you closer to Allah, and every moment of taqwā illuminates your path to Paradise. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy embraces all who turn to Him. So, answer His call today — fear Him, obey Him, and taste the sweetness of faith that transforms your life forever.
