Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jannāt (جَنَّاتٍ): Lush, fruitful gardens and orchards with abundant trees and shade.
- ʿUyūn (عُيُون): Flowing springs and water sources that gush forth from the earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, the Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) continues his gentle yet profound admonition to his people, the Thamūd. He reminds them of the immense blessings they enjoy, asking them rhetorically: "Will you be left secure amidst gardens and flowing springs?" The meaning is a wake-up call—do you truly believe that all this luxury and comfort will last forever, without any reckoning or consequence for your disbelief and disobedience?
The "gardens" refer to their fertile orchards and plantations, bursting with greenery and fruit, while the "flowing springs" point to the abundant water sources that irrigate their land and sustain their lives. These were not mere simple blessings; they were signs of Allah’s generosity and care. Yet, the people had become arrogant and heedless, taking these gifts for granted and using their prosperity to indulge in pride and rebellion against their Creator.
The verse subtly implies a warning: all these blessings are temporary tests, not permanent rewards. If they continue in their transgression, these very gardens and springs could be taken away in an instant. It is an invitation to reflect: How can one enjoy the gifts of Allah while denying the Giver Himself? How can one feel secure from the punishment of the One who provided all this?
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and look around you. The food you eat, the water you drink, the shelter that protects you—every single blessing is a gift from Allah, the Most Merciful. Yet, how often do we forget Him in times of ease? How often do we become so absorbed in the pleasures of this world that we neglect the purpose for which we were created?
This verse is a beautiful reminder that gratitude is not just with the tongue, but with the heart and actions. When you recognize that every garden and every spring is from Allah, your heart fills with love for Him, and your life transforms into an act of worship. Do not be like those who received blessings and became arrogant; rather, be among those who see every blessing as a reason to draw closer to their Lord. For the One who gave you these gardens in this temporary world has prepared for His righteous servants gardens in the Hereafter "beneath which rivers flow," where they will abide forever—a reward far greater and more lasting than anything this world can offer. So, turn to Allah with a sincere heart, and you will find His mercy and generosity beyond your imagination.
