Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Qistās (الْقِسْطَاسِ): The scale or balance used for weighing; it refers to the instrument of measurement, whether for weighing goods or for any form of fair assessment.
- Al-Mustaqīm (الْمُسْتَقِيمِ): The straight, upright, and correct one—meaning the balance that is perfectly calibrated, free from any deviation, tilt, or injustice.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of the counsel of Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) to his people, who were notorious for cheating in their business dealings—particularly by giving short measure and short weight when selling, while demanding full measure when buying. After commanding them to give full measure, Allah—through the words of Shuʿayb—adds: *"And weigh with the straight balance."*
This means: when you weigh goods for others, use a scale that is perfectly accurate and just. Do not tilt it in your favor, do not shave off a fraction of the weight, and do not manipulate the instrument to deceive the buyer. The "straight balance" is one that is properly calibrated, honest in its readings, and used with full integrity. This command applies not only to physical scales but to every form of measurement and fairness in human transactions—whether in trade, in promises, in testimonies, or in any matter where rights are exchanged.
The verse carries a profound moral and spiritual message: justice in weights and measures is a reflection of one's faith. When a person is honest in the smallest transactions, they demonstrate their awareness that Allah is watching and that every deed will be weighed on the Day of Judgment with a balance that never errs. Cheating in this world's scales is a sign of heedlessness about the scales of the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, imagine the beauty of a society where every transaction is conducted with perfect fairness—where no one fears being deceived, where trust is the foundation of commerce, and where hearts are at peace knowing that their rights are protected. This is what Islam seeks to build: a community of integrity, where even a single grain is not taken unjustly. The command to use the straight balance is not merely about trade; it is about cultivating a soul that is upright in all its affairs. When you are honest in your dealings, you are not only fulfilling a religious duty—you are also earning the trust of people and the pleasure of your Lord. And remember: the One who commanded you to weigh fairly will Himself weigh your deeds with perfect justice on a Day when no wrong will be done to anyone, not even the weight of a mustard seed. So let your scales be straight in this world, that your scale may be heavy with good deeds in the next.
