Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Kayl (الكَيْل): The measure or quantity of goods, typically grains or similar commodities, sold by volume.
  • Al-Mukh'sireen (المُخْسِرِين): Those who cause loss to others by giving less than what is due—those who cheat in weights and measures, thereby diminishing people's rights.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) addressed his people, the dwellers of the Aykah (the thicket), who were notorious for their fraudulent practices in trade. They would shortchange customers by giving less than the full measure when selling, while taking full measure when buying. Allah commanded through His prophet: "Complete the measure fully for the people when you sell to them, and do not be among those who cause loss to others." This means: give the full, exact amount owed—whether in volume, weight, or any other form of transaction—and do not diminish anyone's rights, for doing so is a grave injustice that corrupts society and invites divine punishment. The command is a call to absolute honesty and fairness in all dealings, as Islam demands that a believer's character be upright in every aspect, especially in commerce, which affects the daily lives of people. By fulfilling measures and weights precisely, you uphold justice, earn the trust of others, and secure blessings in your livelihood. Conversely, cheating in trade is a form of oppression that brings ruin to both the individual and the community. This verse is a timeless reminder that Allah watches over every transaction, and He loves those who are honest and just. Let this be an invitation to every Muslim to reflect on their own dealings—whether in business, work, or daily interactions—and to strive for excellence in honesty, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The truthful, trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs" (Tirmidhi). Embrace this noble character, and you will find success in this world and the Hereafter.
