Word Meanings:

What did it avail" or "what did it benefit"; it is a rhetorical question expressing negation, meaning that nothing was of any use.
  • عَنْهُم – "from them" or "for them," referring to the disbelievers who rejected the truth.
  • مَّا كَانُوا يُمَتَّعُونَ – "what they used to enjoy" – i.e., the pleasures, wealth, comfort, and long life they were given in this worldly life.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse poses a profound rhetorical question: What did all the worldly enjoyment, luxury, and prolonged comfort avail those who persisted in disbelief and rejected the message of truth? The answer is unequivocally: nothing at all. All the blessings they relished — their wealth, their health, their leisure, their status — were but temporary provisions that could not shield them from the inevitable punishment of Allah when it arrives. Whether that punishment comes sooner or later, all those pleasures will vanish in an instant, leaving them utterly defenseless. The enjoyments they took pride in, and which made them arrogant and heedless, will not intercede for them, nor will they delay the divine decree by even a moment. When the chastisement descends — be it in this world or in the Hereafter — they will realize that everything they had was nothing more than a fleeting mirage, and that their true loss is beyond measure.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: the life of this world, with all its glitter and allure, is but a passing shadow. How many people have been deceived by its temporary comforts, believing that their wealth, their youth, or their achievements will protect them? Yet, death comes to every soul, and the Day of Judgment is certain. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world blind you to the eternal bliss that awaits those who believe and do righteous deeds. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you this very moment to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to invest in what truly lasts — faith, good character, and deeds done for His sake. The enjoyments of this world are like a drop of water in the ocean compared to the everlasting delights of Paradise. So, seize this opportunity before it is too late, and let your heart find peace in the remembrance of your Lord, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and He loves those who return to Him.

📜 Verse 205-209 — Ash-Shu'ara

Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years
And then there came to them that which they were promised?
They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.
And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners
As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.
