Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a decisive refutation of the false claim made by the disbelievers of Makkah, who alleged that the Qur’an was brought down to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by devils and evil spirits. Allah, the Exalted, responds to this slander with two powerful negations that leave no room for doubt.
First, Allah states that it is not fitting or proper for the devils to bring down the Qur’an. This is because the Qur’an is a book of pure guidance, light, mercy, and wisdom. It commands righteousness, forbids evil, and calls humanity to the worship of the One True God. The nature of the devils is entirely opposite—they are beings of corruption, misguidance, and evil. How could beings whose very essence is darkness and deception be the carriers of a message that is pure light and truth? It would be a complete contradiction of their nature and purpose. The Qur’an is a revelation that elevates the soul, purifies the heart, and leads to eternal success—such a treasure is never entrusted to those whose mission is to mislead and destroy.
Second, Allah states that even if they wanted to, the devils are utterly incapable of doing so. They are completely unable to bring down the Qur’an or anything like it. Allah has sealed this path entirely. The heavens are guarded by mighty angels, and the devils are pelted with flaming meteors (shihab) whenever they attempt to eavesdrop on the celestial realm. They are barred from accessing the divine revelation, and thus they cannot steal even a single word of it, let alone deliver an entire book as profound and miraculous as the Qur’an. This is a physical and spiritual barrier that they cannot overcome, no matter how hard they try.
So, the verse dismantles the disbelievers’ claim from two angles: the moral impossibility (it is not befitting for them) and the physical impossibility (they are not able to do it). The Qur’an is a revelation that comes solely from Allah, the Lord of the worlds, delivered by the trustworthy Spirit (Jibril, peace be upon him) to the heart of the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him).
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse and let it strengthen your conviction. The Qur’an you hold in your hands is not the product of any human mind, nor the whisper of any devil—it is the very speech of Allah, preserved and protected from any corruption. The fact that the devils cannot even approach it is a testament to its divine origin and its eternal purity. When you recite the Qur’an, you are connecting with the words of your Creator, words that carry healing for your heart, light for your path, and mercy for your soul. Let this certainty fill your heart with tranquility and love for this magnificent Book. And let it also be a reminder to cling firmly to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, for they are the two treasures that will never lead you astray. May Allah make us among those who recite His Book, act upon it, and defend it with sincerity and devotion.
