Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Aṣnām (أصنامًا): Idols or statues, typically carved from stone or other materials, often fashioned in the shape of human beings or other forms, which were worshipped instead of Allah.
  • ʿĀkifīn (عاكفين): Devotedly clinging to something, remaining steadfast in its service, and dedicating oneself entirely to it—similar to the concept of iʿtikāf (seclusion in the mosque for worship), but here directed toward false deities.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, we hear the response of Prophet Ibrāhīm’s (Abraham, peace be upon him) people when he questioned them about what they worshipped. They replied plainly and without hesitation: “We worship idols, and to them we remain devoted.” Their words reveal a profound spiritual emptiness—they had no rational basis for their worship, no revelation, and no divine command. They simply clung to the traditions of their forefathers, spending their days and nights in constant attendance upon lifeless stones and statues. The phrase “we remain devoted” (fa-naẓallu lahā ʿākifīn) shows that their worship was not a passing whim but a persistent, daily practice—they would stay at the shrines of these idols, performing rituals and offering their time and energy to objects that could neither hear, see, nor benefit them in any way.

This exchange is part of a larger dialogue in which Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) invites his people to reflect. By asking them about their worship, he opens the door for reason and truth to enter their hearts. Their answer exposes the absurdity of their practice: how can a human being, endowed with intellect and a soul, bow down to a piece of stone that cannot move, speak, or defend itself? The verse serves as a timeless reminder for all of us to examine what we truly devote our lives to. Are we worshipping the Creator who sustains us, or are we, in one way or another, clinging to “idols” of our own making—such as wealth, status, desires, or blind following of tradition?

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to pause and consider the nature of true devotion. The people of Ibrāhīm were sincere in their dedication—they were not lazy or careless in their worship. Yet their sincerity was misplaced, and therefore it was worthless. How many of us today are equally sincere in our pursuits, spending our days and nights “devoted” to things that will leave us empty on the Day of Judgment? Islam calls you to redirect that same energy, that same steadfastness, toward the One who created you, who hears your prayers, and who responds to your needs. The Qur’ān and the Sunnah offer you a path of clarity and peace, where your worship is not built on guesswork but on divine guidance. Embrace it, and you will find that true devotion to Allah brings a tranquility that no idol—whether of stone or of worldly desires—can ever provide. May Allah guide us all to the straight path, and may He make us among those who are truly devoted to Him alone.

And recite to them the news of Abraham,
When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"
They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."
He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?
Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"
