- إِذْ تَدْعُونَ (when you call upon them): This refers to the act of supplication, invocation, and worship directed toward these idols.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) poses a profound and thought-provoking question to his people, who were worshipping idols carved from stone and wood. He asks them: "Do these idols hear you when you call upon them?"
This question is not merely rhetorical — it is a powerful logical argument designed to awaken their innate reasoning and challenge the very foundation of their worship. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is guiding them to reflect: How can something that cannot hear, see, or respond be worthy of your worship? How can you direct your prayers, hopes, and fears to beings that are completely oblivious to your existence?
The question carries within it a deeper invitation — to redirect their worship to the One who truly hears every whisper, every silent prayer, and every cry of the heart. The One who responds to those who call upon Him, and who is closer to us than our own jugular vein.
This verse serves as a timeless reminder for all of humanity: before we devote our hearts, our time, and our lives to anything, we must ask ourselves — does it hear us? Does it benefit us? Does it harm us? Only Allah — the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing — possesses these attributes in their absolute perfection. He is the only One worthy of our worship, our love, and our complete submission.
The beauty of Ibrahim's approach lies in its gentleness and wisdom. He does not insult his people or mock their beliefs harshly; rather, he engages their intellect with a simple, clear question that plants the seed of truth in their hearts. This is the prophetic method of da'wah — inviting others to the truth with wisdom, beautiful admonition, and logical reasoning, leaving the door open for reflection and guidance.
Let this verse inspire us to purify our worship, ensuring that it is directed solely to Allah, and to reflect on the countless blessings He bestows upon us — for He hears us when we call, answers us when we pray, and never abandons those who turn to Him sincerely.
