Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sarmadan (سَرْمَدًا): Perpetual, continuous, unending — without any break or interruption.
- Dhiya’ (ضِيَاء): Light — specifically the light of day that illuminates the earth and enables life to flourish.
- Afala tasma’un (أَفَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ): "Will you not hear?" — meaning, will you not listen with understanding and acceptance?
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to those who deny the Oneness of Allah: "Tell me — if Allah were to make the night perpetual over you, continuous and unbroken, with no dawn ever breaking until the Day of Resurrection — who, other than Allah, could bring you light?" Think deeply about this: the night would swallow everything in darkness, and you would be plunged into an endless gloom where no work could be done, no food could be sought, no life could continue. The sun would never rise, and the world would become a prison of cold and darkness.
Who besides Allah — the Most Merciful, the All-Powerful — could split that darkness with the light of day? No idol, no stone, no statue, no created being has the power to command the sun or the seasons. Only Allah, the Creator of all things, alternates the night and the day by His infinite wisdom and mercy.
So will you not hear this proof with ears of understanding and hearts of acceptance? Will you not realize that the One who gives you light after darkness, and rest after toil, is alone worthy of your worship?
This verse is a profound call to reflect on Allah's boundless favors. Every single morning when the sun rises, it is a living testimony to His mercy — a mercy that never fails, a power that never weakens. The One who brings light from darkness is the same One who brings life from death, guidance from misguidance, and hope from despair.
So open your hearts, dear reader, to this magnificent truth: the Lord who illuminates the universe is the Lord who illuminates your soul with faith. Turn to Him, thank Him, and worship Him alone — for He is the One who answers when you call, and He is the One who brings you from the darkness of ignorance into the light of guidance. Will you not then hear? Will you not then believe?
