Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yahdi – to become clear, to be guided to understanding.
- Al-Qurūn – past nations and generations that came before.
- Masākinihim – their dwellings, homes, and remnants of their civilizations.
- Āyāt – signs, lessons, and profound evidence.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Has it not become clear to these deniers of the truth how many nations We destroyed before them? Those very people whose ruins they now pass by in their travels and daily journeys—the remnants of the dwellings of ʿĀd, Thamūd, and the people of Lūṭ. They walk through these abandoned homes and see with their own eyes the traces of destruction that befell those who came before, yet they fail to take heed.
Indeed, in this destruction of past nations—who were stronger in power, wealth, and numbers—there are clear signs and profound lessons. These ruins stand as silent witnesses to the truth of the messengers who were sent to those peoples, and to the falsehood of the polytheism and disobedience they persisted in. The very fact that these once-thriving civilizations are now empty shells, while their people are gone, proves that the warnings of the prophets were true and that Allah’s promise of punishment is certain.
So will these deniers not listen with hearts that accept the truth and minds that reflect? Will they not open their ears to the admonitions of Allah and the stories of the past, so that they may turn away from their disbelief and return to their Lord before the same fate befalls them?
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder! The ruins of ancient civilizations are not mere tourist attractions—they are open books of divine wisdom. Every broken pillar and deserted home tells a story of a people who rejected guidance and faced the consequences. Today, you have the gift of the Qur’an, the final revelation, and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Do not let these signs pass you by as if they were nothing. Listen with your heart, reflect with your mind, and let these lessons draw you closer to your Creator. The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast—so why wait until it is too late? Embrace the truth now, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next.
