Word Meanings:
- Mithqāl dharratin (مثقال ذرة): The weight of a tiny ant or the smallest particle of dust — an expression denoting the absolute minimum amount.
- Shirk (شرك): Partnership or shared ownership.
- Zahīr (ظهير): A helper, supporter, or backer.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, say to those who associate partners with Allah: "Call upon those whom you claim to be deities besides Allah — whether they be idols, angels, or human beings — and seek from them what you need. You will find that they cannot answer you, for they possess not even the weight of a speck of dust in the heavens or on the earth. They have no share whatsoever in the creation or ownership of anything within them, nor does Allah have any helper from among them. Rather, Allah — glorified and exalted — alone creates, alone owns, and alone manages all affairs. He is utterly free of any need for partners or assistants."
This verse dismantles the very foundation of polytheism by exposing the absolute powerlessness of all false deities. If these so-called gods cannot control even the smallest particle in existence, how could they possibly deserve worship, provide benefit, or ward off harm? The polytheists of Makkah claimed their idols interceded for them, yet these idols could not even help themselves. The angels they worshipped as daughters of Allah had no share in creation, and the righteous humans they venerated had no authority over anything. Allah, in His infinite majesty, stands alone in His sovereignty — needing no helper, no partner, and no associate.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this profound truth: the One who created the heavens and the earth, who set the stars in their courses and the oceans in their bounds, who breathes life into every creature — does He need a partner? Could any being share in His dominion? The very question is an impossibility. Yet how often do we, in our daily lives, turn to created things as if they hold power over our destinies? We fear people, we depend on wealth, we place our hopes in positions and status — forgetting that all of these are merely tools in the Hand of the One who owns everything. When you truly internalise that no one — not the mightiest king, not the most beloved saint, not the most powerful angel — possesses even an atom's weight of independent power, your heart will find rest. You will turn only to Allah, the Self-Sufficient, the Almighty, and you will experience the sweetness of relying upon the One who never fails. This is the essence of true faith: to know that all power belongs to Allah alone, and to live in the light of that knowledge — free from the chains of false dependence, and filled with the peace that comes from surrendering to the Lord of all worlds.
