Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Matā" (متى): When? – used here to express mockery and impatience, not genuine inquiry.
- "Hādhā al-Wa'd" (هذا الوعد): This promise – referring to the promise of resurrection, judgment, and punishment.
- "Ṣādiqīn" (صادقين): Truthful ones – those who claim to be honest in what they say.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers, in their arrogance and mockery, repeatedly ask: "When will this promise come to pass, if you are truly truthful?" They address this challenge to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers, taunting them with impatience and disbelief. They demand to know the exact timing of the Day of Judgment, the punishment, and the final recompense — as if they could hasten what Allah has already decreed.
This verse captures the essence of their stubbornness: they treat the promise of Allah as a distant, impossible fantasy, mocking it with sarcasm rather than reflecting upon its certainty. They say, "If you are truthful, then bring it now!" — not out of a sincere desire to know the truth, but out of ridicule and defiance.
Yet, the believer knows that Allah's promise is absolutely true and will come to pass at the exact time He has willed — not a moment sooner or later. The disbelievers' haste and mockery do not change the reality of what is to come. They are like a child who denies the sunrise because he cannot see it in the dark of night, unaware that the dawn is already approaching.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on this verse and ask yourself: Are you among those who mock the promise of Allah, or among those who prepare for it? The Day of Judgment is not a distant myth — it is a certainty that every soul will face. The disbelievers asked this question out of arrogance, but the wise believer asks: "What have I prepared for that Day?" Do not let the mockery of others distract you from the truth. The promise of Allah is real, His justice is perfect, and His timing is precise. Embrace faith before that Day arrives, when no amount of questioning will delay it, and no excuse will be accepted. Let this verse be a reminder to you: the Hereafter is nearer than you think, and the wise are those who live with it always in their hearts.
