Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bashar (بشر): Human being, mortal.
- Anzala (أنزل): Sent down, revealed.
- Ar-Rahman (الرحمن): The Most Merciful — a name of Allah emphasizing His encompassing mercy.
- Takdhibun (تكذبون): You are lying, fabricating falsehood.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the messengers came to the people of the town with the call to worship Allah alone, the people responded with rejection and arrogance. They said: "You are nothing but human beings like us — you have no superiority over us, no special status that would make you worthy of receiving revelation. Allah, the Most Merciful, has not sent down anything to any human being. You are simply lying in your claim of prophethood."
Their words reveal a deep-seated ignorance and stubbornness. They judged the truth by the outward appearance of the messengers rather than by the truth of their message. They could not conceive that Allah would choose ordinary humans to carry His divine guidance, and they dismissed the very possibility of revelation altogether.
This attitude is a timeless lesson for humanity: the rejection of truth often stems from arrogance and the inability to accept that guidance can come through those whom we consider our equals. The people of the town failed to realize that Allah's mercy — signified by His name Ar-Rahman — is precisely what moved Him to send messengers to guide His creation. The very fact that they invoked His mercy while denying its manifestation in revelation was a contradiction within their own words.
Dear reader, reflect on this: the messengers were indeed human, but they were chosen by Allah, purified, and supported with miracles and divine wisdom. Their humanity was not a weakness but a mercy — for how else could they relate to us, teach us, and guide us in our daily lives? The Qur'an itself affirms: "And We did not send before you any messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets" (25:20). Their humanity made them relatable; their message made them extraordinary.
Do not be like those who rejected the truth simply because the bearer of truth appeared ordinary. Look instead at the content of the message, the beauty of its guidance, and the transformation it brings to hearts and societies. The messengers of Allah — from Noah to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — came with one consistent call: worship Allah alone, and you will find success in this life and the next. That call remains as relevant today as it was then. Will you respond with faith, or with the same words of denial that brought ruin to those before you?
