Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Fastaftihim" (فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ): Ask them, inquire of them — a rhetorical questioning meant to challenge and rebuke.
- "Ashaddun khalqan" (أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا): Stronger in creation, more powerful in form and structure.
- "Lazib" (لَازِبٍ): Sticky, clinging clay — moist earth that adheres to itself and to whatever touches it.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, ask those who deny the resurrection — the disbelievers of Quraysh — a question that exposes the weakness of their claim: Are they more difficult to create, or the mighty creations We have brought into being — the heavens, the earth, the angels, and all that exists between them? The answer is self-evident: these vast and magnificent creations are far greater and more awe-inspiring than the creation of mere human beings. If they acknowledge that Allah created the heavens and the earth — and they do — then how can they deny that He is able to bring them back to life after death?
Indeed, their very origin is humble and weak. We created them — and their father Adam before them — from sticky, clinging clay that adheres to itself. From such a lowly substance did their existence begin, and yet they now walk the earth with arrogance, questioning the power of the One who fashioned them. If Allah could create them from that humble beginning, then bringing them back to life for the resurrection is even easier and more within His boundless power.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: reflect on your own origin. You were created from something insignificant, and your Creator perfected you into a human being with hearing, sight, intellect, and a soul. The One who began your creation with such precision and mercy is certainly capable of returning you to life after death. So do not let pride and denial blind you — rather, turn to your Lord with humility and gratitude, for He is the One who created you, sustains you, and will bring you back to Him. Embrace this truth, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
