Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Najjaynāhumā" (وَنَجَّيْنَاهُمَا): We saved and delivered both of them (Moses and Aaron, peace be upon them).
- "Wa qawmahumā" (وَقَوْمَهُمَا): And their people — meaning the Children of Israel (Banī Isrā'īl).
- "Al-karb al-ʿaẓīm" (الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ): The great distress, anguish, and overwhelming hardship.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) recounts His immense favour upon His two chosen prophets, Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them), as part of the broader story of His blessings upon them. After mentioning how He guided them, honoured them with prophethood and the message, and blessed them with righteous offspring, Allah now highlights another great mercy: He saved them and their people from the terrible distress.
This "great distress" refers to two intertwined calamities that the Children of Israel suffered under the tyrannical rule of Pharaoh. First, they were subjected to enslavement and humiliation — Pharaoh and his chiefs used them as servants, forced them into hard labour, and treated them with utter contempt. Their sons were slaughtered at birth, and their daughters were spared only for servitude. This was a crushing burden of oppression and psychological torment. Second, they faced the threat of drowning in the sea when Pharaoh pursued them with his mighty army after their exodus from Egypt. Yet, by Allah's command, the sea parted for them, and they crossed safely, while Pharaoh and his forces were drowned before their very eyes.
Thus, Allah delivered them from both the ongoing agony of bondage and the imminent catastrophe of annihilation. This was a complete and decisive rescue — a demonstration of Allah's absolute power and His unwavering support for the believers who remain patient and steadfast in their faith.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a timeless reminder that no matter how immense the hardship, Allah's relief is always near for those who trust in Him. The story of Moses and Aaron is not merely history; it is a living lesson for every believer. When you face trials — whether oppression, fear, or overwhelming circumstances — remember that the same Allah who split the sea for His servants is fully capable of removing your burdens in ways you cannot imagine. Let this verse fill your heart with hope and strengthen your certainty that after every difficulty comes ease. And just as Allah honoured Moses and Aaron for their patience and unwavering call to His path, He will honour you if you remain firm in your faith and obedience. So turn to Him sincerely, seek His help in prayer and supplication, and trust that His promise of deliverance is true — for He never abandons those who love Him and strive in His cause.
