Word Meanings:
- أَإِذَا مِتْنَا – "When we have died": a rhetorical question expressing extreme astonishment and denial.
- تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا – "Dust and bones": referring to the complete disintegration of the human body after death, becoming decomposed remains.
- لَمَدِينُونَ – "Indeed we will be requited/recompensed": meaning we will be resurrected, held accountable, and rewarded or punished for our deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse captures the voice of a denier—one who mocks the idea of resurrection and the afterlife. He says, in utter disbelief: "What? When we have died and become dust and bones—are we truly going to be brought back to life and called to account for what we did in this world?" The repetition of the interrogative form (أَإِذَا... أَإِنَّا) emphasizes the depth of his astonishment and rejection. He finds it impossible that a human being, after turning into scattered dust and crumbling bones, could be reassembled, revived, and then judged for every action—whether good or evil.
The verse highlights a fundamental truth: the resurrection is not a matter of human logic or limited imagination, but a promise from the All-Powerful Creator, who originated creation from nothing and is fully capable of restoring it. The one who denies this is not merely rejecting an abstract idea—he is refusing to accept that his deeds carry weight and that he will face their consequences. This is a call to reflect: if this world is all there is, then justice would be incomplete, and the oppressed would never see their rights restored. But Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, has decreed a Day when every soul will be fully recompensed for what it earned.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: the very bones that seem so fragile and perishable to you are the same bones that the Almighty will revive with a single command. If you can trust that the One who created you from nothing can bring you back after death, then why not prepare for that meeting? The denial of the resurrection is not a victory over death—it is a loss of the greatest opportunity to invest in an eternal life. Embrace the truth while you have the chance, for on that Day, every soul will see the outcome of its choices, and the scales of justice will be set with absolute precision. Let this verse awaken in you a living faith that transforms your deeds into seeds of everlasting success.
